The Case IH brand and company were formed in 1985 when Tenneco (the parent company of the J. I. Case Company) bought the agricultural division of International Harvester and merged it into the Case company.
Case was founded in 1842 by Jerome Case as the J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company. In the late 1800s, Case was one of the biggest manufacturers of steam engines, steam tractors, and traction engines. It also was a big builder of threshing machines and related harvesting gear, as the name hints. Throughout the 1900s, they generally occupied a place in the top 10 agricultural tractor manufacturers.
International Harvester (usually called just International or IH) was founded in 1902 by the merger of the Deering Harvester Company and the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and three smaller agricultural manufacturing companies. (This merger was financed by none other than the legendary banker J. P. Morgan himself, of J. P. Morgan Chase fame.) IH's most famous brand was probably the Farmall tractor, though the Cub Cadet, Scout, and Travelall are iconic as well.
